Learning to look again

An afternoon drawing the same cup without trying to improve it.

Our drawing exercise was wonderfully uneventful: choose an object, draw it, turn the page, and draw it again. I chose the cup beside my notebook.

By the fourth attempt, I had stopped drawing the cup I expected to see. The handle was lower. The rim was uneven. A tiny shadow did more work than the careful outline I had started with.

None of the drawings needed to be framed. They were a way of finding out how much attention an ordinary object could hold.
